We’ve all been there before.
You finish a book and then… you just don’t know what to do with yourself! You’re speechless. Either you can’t believe what’s happened to the characters you’ve grown to love, or the ending of the book just left such a profound impact on you, that you just can’t go on!
Well, I’m here to share some of my favorite books that have left me absolutely speechless. Here goes!
1. Handle With Care by Jodi Picoult
Willow is born with osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease. Despite the hardships of her disease, five-year-old Willow is smart, funny, and, to her parents, perfect. Of course, her parents wish she would have been born healthy, but they make do with what they’ve been given. But everything changes once they learn that they might have been able to know earlier if their baby would be born healthy. Would things have been different if they’d known? Would it have been better if Willow was never born?
This book took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions. The whole book is based on trying to protect Willow, to keep her alive and well, while her parents struggle with a potential medical malpractice lawsuit against their doctor/family friend. All I can say is the ending will leave you in tears!

2. Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
Flowers for Algernon is narrated through the diary entries of Charlie, a mentally disabled man who agrees to participate in an experiment that will improve his IQ, an experiment that has only been tested on a mouse called Algernon. Charlie’s intelligence increases, and ultimately surpasses that of the doctors performing the tests. The experiment seems to be a success until Algernon begins to deteriorate. Will the same happen to Charlie?
This book… just wow. Seeing the story through the eyes of Charlie just makes the book so real. Starting at the beginning, before he starts the experiment, and watching his transformation as his IQ improves… it’s just amazing. His life completely changes. Once Algernon’s intelligence begins to deteriorate, you start to worry about Charlie! It’s a profound story that everyone should read!
3. Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon
Everything, Everything is the story of Maddy, a teenager who is allergic to, well, everything. She has never left the confines of her home. The only human contact she has is with her mother and her nurse. Then one day a boy moves in next door and captures her attention. They start to correspond through email, and their budding romance takes off from there. What happens when Maddy decides she just can’t stay inside anymore, when she just has to be with Olly?
This was an interesting read for me. To be honest, I’m not usually a fan of YA romance storylines, but I thought I’d give it a shot. It was fascinating to see how Maddy “lives” her life indoors, never stepping foot outside her house. There is a surprising twist at the end of the novel that just left me speechless, and a bit angry! It’s a must-read!

4. My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult
Anna’s older sister, Kate, has leukemia. Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate and has undergone countless surgeries by the age of thirteen. Anna has never had a choice in the matter, until now. She wants control of her own body. She doesn’t want any more surgeries. But this decision may tear her family apart, and might even cost her sister her life.
My Sister’s Keeper is definitely one of those books that stick with you. Anna’s struggle for independence brings about an important ethical decision for her and her family. The entire book is focused on Anna and her determination to be medically emancipated so as to make her own decisions regarding her body. Just as all Jodi Picoult novels, the plot twist shocker at the end will get you.
Do you know of any other books with a shocking twist? Ones that have just left you speechless?
